From Bob to Bob

The first thing that caught my eye was the pop of bubble-gum pink. Then I noticed his youthful smile and the unfamiliar triangular shape of the Cardinals logo. The extra dot above his facsimile signature hinted that he may not have been practicing it, this being his first season. I was simultaneously transported to an unfamiliar past while getting excited for the future.

I was looking at St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Bob Gibson’s rookie card from the iconic 1959 Topps baseball card set. It was my first time seeing the card and it made an instant impression.

One of my resolutions for 2026 was to start collecting a vintage baseball card set. When I had the idea, I didn’t really know where to start or which set to choose. I considered picking a year that was somehow relevant to me like my dad’s birth year (1963) because he got me into collecting as a kid. 1962 was a contender, being the year the Mets entered the league and the year my mom was born. The 70s and 80s also called to me because I knew more of the players from those decades than from an older set. All of that went out the window when I saw the Gibson and I knew it had to be 1959 Topps.

After researching prices, I realized the Gibson was one of the most valuable cards in the set, fetching about $1,000 depending on the condition, and certainly wouldn’t be my entry into vintage set collecting, and instead would the the crown atop my completed ’59 someday. I hopped over to Facebook Marketplace and as luck would have it, a collector in my town was selling a 1959 Topps Roberto Clemente card. The Clemente similarly popped with a bright yellow border and I was intrigued by “Bob” Clemente when I had always known him as Roberto. The $100 price tag screamed “start here” to me.

As a Bob myself, the symmetry of my first and last cards in the set being players named “Bob” felt like a sign from the card collecting universe that 1959 Topps was the right choice for me.
